The key,
to better workforce returns
Great Team Dynamics
Six decades of research tells us that team dynamics are the foundation of performance. Google project Aristotle says they are the most important driver of performance, without them the other factors are compromised.
Understanding team dynamics is the first step. The valuable insights come when we gather performance data and correlate team dynamics with key performance measures. When you do this you discover and quantify the opportunities for bottom line impact.
What are team dynamics?
The common hypothesis is: you can make teams better by putting the right people together right. But millions of dollars worth of research shows that there is no correlation between who is on the team whether that team is effective of not. The same research found that group norms are the thing that determines whether a team is successful or not.
What matters is how the team, including the leader, interacts with one another. How they communicate determines whether they feel safe to ask questions, volunteer ideas, criticise the status quo, challenge one another for accountability, and make mistakes. It’s all about these team dynamics.
Dr. Amy Edmondson introduced the term psychological safety in the workplace, and defined it as "a climate in which people are comfortable being and expressing themselves.” Amy and others have shown that psychological safety (aka team dynamics) predicts staff retention, learning behaviour, quality improvements, productivity and the bottom line. Google, Gallup and Harvard have shown that workplace psychological safety is the primary driver of team performance.
As Amy says, “Psychological safety at work takes effort. It’s not the norm. But it’s worth the effort. A culture of open candour, and the willingness and courage to speak up, is a strategic asset and can be developed in any company."
Why measure team dynamics
One of the most important things to keep in mind is that when an employee fails to speak up in a crucial moment it’s invisible. This means that in order to ‘see’ the invisible silence of team dynamics, in your workplace, you have to measure them. It’s the first step before you can begin to build the worker confidence and dynamics, meaningful conversations, and valuable reports that contribute to a successful, fearless organisation.
Team dynamics, feeling safe to speak up, does not happen by chance. Psychological safety is nurtured. This is true whether that employee is on the frontline of customer service or sitting next to you in the executive boardroom. Not offering an idea cannot be seen, so it’s hard to engage in real-time course correction.
Relying on your employees to be courageous, in the absence of effective team dynamics, shows a misunderstanding of human psychology, and is a bad business strategy. Most of us are not courageous in the moment when we feel at risk. And companies don’t explicitly recruit for courage in the face of bad behaviour from bosses or peers.
This also means that psychologically-safe workplaces have a powerful advantage in competitive industries.
