The surprising benefits of BioRoc

Improved Soil Fertility: BioRoc's porous structure acts like a sponge, holding onto nutrients and water in the soil.  This makes them more readily available for plants and reduces leaching, which is the loss of nutrients through drainage.

Enhanced Water Retention: BioRoc has the ability to hold water that  is a game-changer.  It helps retain moisture during dry periods, reducing the need for frequent irrigation.

Boosted Soil Microbes: The nooks and crannies within BioRoc provides a haven for beneficial bacteria and fungi in the soil.  These microbes play a crucial role in breaking down organic matter and making nutrients even more accessible to plants.

Reduced Acidity: BioRoc helps to neutralise acidic soils, making them more suitable for a wider range of plants.

Potential for Carbon Sequestration: Since BioRoc is very stable and decomposes slowly, it can store carbon in the soil for thousands of years. This can help mitigate climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Moving away,
from synthetic fertilisers

Synthetic fertilisers have been a boon to commercial farming, allowing for increased crop yields and feeding larger populations.  However, their overuse has had several negative consequences for the environment, food crop quality, and even human health.  Here are some ever increasing issues for commercial farming:

Soil degradation

Overreliance on synthetic fertilisers can disrupt the delicate balance of microorganisms in the soil.  These microbes help break down organic matter and contribute to soil health.  Long term chemical fertiliser use can kill them off, leading to decreased fertility and higher water loss over time.  Synthetic fertilisers deplete soil nutrients, alter soil pH, and reduce soil biodiversity over time resulting in lower crop yields.

Weaker plants

While synthetic fertilisers promote rapid growth, they may not provide all the nutrients plants need for long-term plant health.  This can make the crop more susceptible to pests and diseases.

Water pollution

Synthetic fertilisers are often high in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.  When these aren't absorbed by plants, they are carried by rain runoff into waterways, lakes, and the oceans, or drain into the water table.  This excess chemical nutrient load can trigger algal blooms, deplete oxygen, and harm aquatic life, and contaminate water aquifers.

Reduced nutritional value

Some studies suggest that crops grown with synthetic fertilisers may have lower levels of essential vitamins and minerals compared to organically grown ones.

Potential health risks

Trace amounts of heavy metals can be present in some synthetic fertilisers.  If these accumulate in the soil, they can enter the food chain and pose health risks.  Also, synthetic fertilisers can accumulate in food crops, potentially exposing consumers to further harmful residues.  They can contain chemicals that can cause respiratory, skin, and eye irritation, and may increase the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases.

Environmental damage

Excessive use of synthetic fertilisers has created “overheated soil”, for example, increasing land areas are being retired because of excessive selenium contamination from chemical fertilisers.

Overall, synthetic fertiliser use is estimated to be responsible for over 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions.  While they play a crucial role in food production, finding ways to use them more efficiently, or exploring alternative fertilisers are important steps in reducing their impact on the climate.

How BioRoc helps farmers thrive

BioRoc™ offers many benefits that make it better for you, for our health, and food security and for the environment – at less cost!  Here are some reasons why choosing BioRoc™ over other fertilisers makes real sense:

Green Leaf

Promotes crop yields & quality

BioRoc™ elevates nutrient uptake to significantly enhance crop yield.  It also stimulates the growth of beneficial soil microbes, fungi, and earthworms, which improve soil fertility and reduces erosion.  It takes 1,000 years to replace 1 centimetre of topsoil. BioRoc™ accomplishes the same thing in 1,000 seconds.  And a tablespoon of healthy soil holds more bacteria than there are humans on Earth.  Healthy soils support diverse soil microbiomes and beneficial organisms, fostering biodiversity in and around farmlands.  A thriving ecosystem contributes to pollination, natural pest control, and overall ecosystem health.

Safer for human health

BioRoc poses no risk to human health. Bioroc is also safe to handle and apply.

Sustainable food production

BioRoc supports sustainable food production by building soil resilience to droughts, boosting crop yields and quality, reducing irrigation requirements, improving food security by promoting local food production vs. imports, and reducing dependence on imported fertilisers.  The reduced need for chemical inputs, lower water inputs, and enhanced soil health, can lower production costs and increase profitability.  By adopting BioRoc, farmers can comply with increasing sustainability regulations, reduce costs, increase profits, and gain a competitive edge in the eco-conscious market.

Lower upfront & ongoing costs

BioRoc’s™ high performance, nutrient-rich ingredients are readily available and abundant. Because BioRoc™ is the combination of all-natural ingredients, it is one of the most affordable fertilisers on the market.

Garden Soil

Water conservation

BioRoc™ enhances soil structure and its water-holding capacity to save 20% of irrigation consumption compared to synthetic fertilisers.  A 30% reduction in the agricultural water consumption represents a significant cost saving, and major reduction to negative environmental impact on waterways and aquifers supplying irrigation water. Minimising soil erosion and chemical runoff also helps protect water bodies and sensitive ecosystems from pollution.

Environmentally friendly

BioRoc™ is made from all natural sources.  It does not contain harmful chemicals, pesticides, or herbicides that can damage soil structure, reduce biodiversity, and contaminate waterways. BioRoc™ uses the concept of Enhanced Rock Weathering which has been proven to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and thus reduce greenhouse emissions. The use of all-natural waste products BioRoc™, removes it from landfills, thereby removing methane from the atmosphere.  Healthy soils play a crucial role in sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.  Sustainable soil conservation practices can increase carbon sequestration, contributing to climate change mitigation and reducing the carbon footprint of commercial farming.

Proof-of-concepts

2017:  Almond Harvest at Stevinson Home Ranch

  • Test Objective: Evaluate the effectiveness of PNTI fertilisers (including BioRoc™) on almond yield.

  • Test Plot: 7-acre section (HR7) of Stevinson Ranch almond orchard.

  • Test Design:

    • Initial fertilisation of HR7 with PNTI products (PoweRoc™, BioRoc™, RocTea™) in October 2016.

    • Second fertilisation in February 2017:

      • HR7 divided into five 1.4-acre sections.

      • Each section received a different combination of PNTI products.

      • No other fertilisers applied during the testing period.

      • PNTI test regions received only water on the same schedule as the main orchard.

    • Almonds harvested at maturity (September for Non-Pareil, October for Monterey).

    • Field weights measured for harvested almonds.

    • Samples collected for laboratory analysis of nut composition (husk, shell, meat).

  • Key Findings:

    • HR7 trees treated with PNTI fertilisers in 2017 yielded an average of 2,107 lbs of almond meats per acre.

    • This represents a 75% increase compared to the untreated yield of 1,202 lbs per acre in 2016.

    • Nutrient levels and average almond weight in PNTI-treated areas closely matched conventionally fertilised trees in another orchard section (HR6).

2019:  Industrial Hemp Field at InnoTech Alberta Research Farm

Objective: Evaluate Candeo's NaturaTerra™ Hemp Blend (BioRoc™ and PoweRoc™) as a sole nutrient source for growing industrial hemp.

Test Plot: One-acre field at InnoTech Alberta research farm.

Test Material: NaturaTerra™ Hemp Blend applied at 4000 lb./acre compared to a control field with standard NPK fertilisers (120 lb./acre N, 60 lb./acre P, 20 lb./acre S).

Hemp Variety: Joey (fibre-type)

Key Findings:

  • NaturaTerra™ Hemp Blend increased grain yield by 72% compared to the control field.

  • No significant difference in total aboveground biomass compared to control, although a 23% increase was observed.

  • Candeo-treated plants were 15% shorter than control plants. (This may be due to application rate or hemp variety.)

  • NaturaTerra™ Hemp Blend increased CBD content in seed heads by 41% compared to control.

  • NaturaTerra™ Hemp Blend increased CBG and THC content in seed heads by 24% and 47% respectively, but THC levels remained below the legal limit.

Conclusions:

  • NaturaTerra™ Hemp Blend shows promise for increasing grain yield and cannabinoid content in hemp.

  • Further research is needed with replicated plots and different application rates.

  • Investigation into the mode of action of the product is recommended.
